Conversations With Pa

My father had a great interest in world affairs, in politics, in economics and business. For his whole life he remained fascinated by what the future would hold. Maybe that is why he lived until 106 years old.

During our conversations, often over a meal, we would explore topics that many people dismiss as obvious or irrelevant. For example what makes our country democratic and is it a good democracy? Where do our rights come from and how might they be threatened? Is free speech under all circumstances a good thing – and if not – how to manage a ‘free society’?

There are so many questions that most people leave unanswered and yet which frame the lives we all lead. Today more than ever there are fundamental changes to the way the world works which will have a profound impact on everyday life.

AI is the current ‘bête noir’ of the chattering classes. Is it a good thing or a bad thing? We will find out soon enough but, whatever happens, it will inevitably play a very large part in our future.

The following articles are inspired by the many chats with my father. Hopefully you will find them thought provoking. If you disagree with any of the ideas, at least it will be a good start to raising awareness of some of the fundamental aspects of everyday life that many of us take for granted.
